The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)

girl who leapt“Makoto: Time waits for no one ” – Yuri

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Sep 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A young girl gets the ability to travel in time and chooses to make everything perfect in her life…until she realizes how it effects everyone else around her.

My Take on it – Anyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE Disney and PIXAR films, but can’t stand anime movies. (and the frustrating part is that I can’t even explain why)

A few of my friends have been trying to help me get over this problem by suggesting titles I might enjoy more than others.

When I saw the premise of this one, I knew I had to see it; how can I not enjoy a movie about time travel.

I really liked how the premise has a very Groundhog Day (1993) or Source Code (2011)- ish feel about it by having its protagonist relive the same day and moments again and again until they get it they way they want, but still felt unique in its own way.

The fact that the reason for the ability isn’t explained didn’t bother me at all because the whole time travel theme worked very well.

The messages of decision making in life and choosing what to make of that life are quite clear throughout.

As I said earlier, I’m not the biggest fan of Anime movies, but this one worked for me mostly because of the execution of its premise.

Hopefully, when I continue on my quest to find some anime movie that I love, I’ll find some gems along the way.

Bottom Line – Very interesting premise that sounds and feels very similar to Groundhog Day (1993) or Source Code (2011), but still manages to find its own unique voice. The time travel aspect works quite well and the messages are crystal clear about how we live our lives and make decisions.  I’m not the biggest fan of anime, but this is (so far) the best I’ve seen.  That being said, It hasn’t made me choose to go watch a bunch more right away. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This movie is an indirect adaptation of Yasutaka Tsutsui’s novel “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” – the main character’s aunt is Yoshiyama Kazuko, the protagonist of the novel. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
