Point Break (1991)

Brief Synopsis – A rookie FBI agent must go undercover as a surfer to try and find a band of bank robbers who dress up like former US Presidents.

My Take on it – The late 80’s and early 90’s really were the golden age of action dramas and in many cases, an anti-action hero actor was cast as the lead in order to show that you don’t always need to have huge muscles to be an action hero.

Most people know Keanu Reeves from Speed (1994), but just three years prior, he was cast in this movie as a rookie FBI agent tasked with finding a group of L.A. bank robbers who are believed to be surfers.

This is a very fun action flick if you take out the element of the absurdity of the plot itself.

It takes the adrenaline rush to the extreme, but the way people partake in extreme sports these days, it seems like they were a bit before their time.

This movie really helped Reeves’ stardom rise up while co-star Patrick Swayze’s was waning.

Certain movies are very iconic and I once again will state for the record that I don’t understand the need to remake movies like this after a mere 24 years.

I can predict that the new version won’t be as good as this one is and it will feel very lacking in many aspects.

Movies are so accessible these days that I have no idea why Hollywood feels the need to try and produce endless remakes that are no where as good as the originals instead of thinking of new and innovative ideas for movies.  Just in the last few years, they have tried to remake numerous movies from the 80’s unsuccessfully;  Footloose (1984), Red Dawn (1984), The Karate Kid (1984) and Robocop (1987) are all prime examples of movies that are FAR superior to their recent remakes.

My suggestion will always be to watch the originals first and maybe then try out some of the awful remakes just for a laugh.

Bottom Line – Great action flick, fun plot despite it being a bit extreme and absurd.  Helped propel Reeves into an action hero while Swayze was on his way down. Pity that they feel this needs to be remade. Recommended!
