Titanic (1997) – Encore Review

Brief Synopsis – A love story between two star-crossed lovers against the backdrop of the first and final voyage of the H.M.S. Titanic,

My Take on it – When I heard about this movie in early 1997, it was being touted as a dasaster movie with a romantic twist to it given to us by the same guy who made both Terminator movies.

It was expected to completely bomb at the theater and would be the biggest flop ever losing millions for he studio.

…and then it came out.

It began to break box office records immediately and the baffling part was that it was because of teenage girls going to see it over and over.  What’s even more puzzling is that since the movie runs over 3 hours, there were less showing available a day, so it shouldn’t be doing that.

But it did…

It took me a few weeks to make the decision to go see it despite it being advertised more the female demographic.

I was immediately drawn in to the story and Director James Cameron was extremely successful in utilizing so many aspects of moviemaking that he was able to create a story that appeals to so many different people on some many different levels for so many different reasons.

The chemistry between leads Late Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio is amazing and I could really believe their love after such a short period of time together.

The score by the late James Horner always feels like it’s trying to tell us the story along with the actors, scenery and special effects.  I am always able to listen to the music score of this film and it gets me in the right mood.

The Theme song sung by Celine Dion (which was apparently made by accident) is extremely powerful and deserved its Oscar.

The way this music was done really helped to prove once again how great a composer he really is.

The plot is also very coherent and I loved the way that Cameron showed us early in the movie what will happen to the ship and this way, he knew what to expect and could focus on other things.

This is a true masterpiece and is one of Cameron’s best films.

Not only did it tie for the most Oscar wins for a movie (11) and also tie for most nominations (2014) but it also sailed its way into being the largest box office hit and became the first movie to cross the billion dollar mark!

A very deserving Best Picture Winner!

BTW, rewatching this movie, has made me want to make changes in my Temporal Top Ten series.  I plan to make this my favorite of the year 1997, because it makes me feel so much.

Bottom Line – One of my favorite movies. Winslet and DiCaprio have such an amazing amount of chemistry together that it’s possible to believe their “quick” love. Amazing music capped off by an unbelievable theme song.  Horner was a true genius.  Movie that manages to bring us everything one can expect from the magic of the movies and it is done almost seamlessly. Very deserving of all 11 of its Oscars.  Highly Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia –  The scenes set in 1912, i.e. the whole movie except the present-day scenes and the opening and ending credits, have a total length of two hours and forty minutes, the exact time it took for Titanic to sink. Also, the collision with the iceberg reportedly lasted 37 seconds, which is how long the collision scene is in the movie. (From IMDB)
