Nostalgia Nonsense #19 – 9/11

Exactly 14 years ago today (This moment actually), we all experienced a day that will live in infamy for us.

Growing up, I had heard stories from people of my grandparents generation about Pearl Harbor and WWII; my parents told stories of the JFK and MLK assassinations and Vietnam and now (unfortunately), I have one to tell my own kids about.

I actually remember that day like it was yesterday.

I recall sitting in my office at about 4pm on that day (I live 7 hours ahead of est) and a co-worker came into my office to tell me that she heard that a small plane had crashed into a skyscraper in NYC.  I thought to myself that the pilot must have been drunk and continued with my work.

A few minutes later, she came back to tell me that apparently another one also hit.

I began to get slightly suspicious and went to CNN’s website with flashed a picture of the Twin Towers smoking and then the site just went blank.  I tried to refresh, but to no avail.

I went into another co-workers office and listened to the radio and heard that two planes had hit the Twin Towers.

I knew I wasn’t gonna be able to get any more work done, so I quickly packed up my things and went home to watch the news.

Thankfully, I lived 5 minutes from my office at the time and ended up being glued to CNN for the next 7 hours.

The whole thing felt so surreal and I didn’t know what to really think.

The amount of unconfirmed information that was being conveyed to us was so daunting because no one really knew what was happening during those tense hours.

I recall watching in horror as the first Tower collapsed and thinking to myself that for the rest of my life, there will only be 1 Twin Tower standing.  Little did I know that that was also only temporary.

It is the only time in my entire life (that I can recall) that I was glued to the news and not wanting to turn it off (or leave the room) out of fear of missing something important.

Ever since that fateful day, there have been numerous movies made to try and give us a better idea of what happened  in order for us to learn something about what happened without knowing the real why.

  2. It’s hard to believe it’s been 14 years. I don’t think anyone will ever forget where they were or what they were doing that horrible day. I live near Boston and was a children’s librarian at the time. My co-workers and I watched in shock as the events unfolded. The decision was made to keep the library open so our patrons would have a place to gather. Our director set up a tv in our meeting room and we took turns going in and watching. We found out later that a resident of our town, Karen Martin, was a flight attendant on one of the planes that left Boston. There’s now a memorial bench outside of our library which overlooks the children’s room, which she loved. Truly a sad, sad day.

  3. I was too young to fully grasp what was happening, but I still remember that day distinctly. I was in elementary school, and after the Pledge of Allegiance, our teacher stepped outside to get a message and seemed upset. A little later, my dad picked me up early, even though the school wasn’t closing yet. To be honest, I don’t recall being told what actually happened; what I remember is how my parents and teachers reacted.
    Planning to see United 93 soon.

  4. Thanks for this post. The comments are touching as well. Being a Canadian, we are greatly influenced by our neighbours. That may sounds simple, but that day reminded us how close we all are… and I’m not talking about the border.

    This day shook us too. It was my first year in college, studying film. We heard about the 1st plane from late students to morning sound class. When class was over we saw the news. School was canceled for the day. All we could think ahout was our neighbours. Every anniversary is the same. I’m taken back, looking up at the skies as all of these colourful planes flew overhead, redirected to land in Toronto. Fear was brewing, we thought of the CN Tower. Was it next?

    That fear still resonates, but let us remember how the world gathered around the fallen. How, together, we can help each other deal with loss.
