Black Mass (2015)

black mass“Take your shot but make it your best. ‘Cause I get up, I eat ya” – Whitey Bolger

Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Oct 2015)

Brief Synopsis – An unauthorized biopic of one of the most notorious mafia men in Boston, Whitey Bulger

My Take on it – Gangster movies have always been prevalent in the industry over the years and some work better than others.

This movie fits into the latter category mainly because the story feels too choppy and disjointed throughout. It feels more like a collection of vignettes instead of a straight biopic which takes away from the overall effect, ultimately making this film feel incomplete.

The one very positive thing that can be said about this movie is that Johnny Depp is all but unrecognizable as the main character and makes us believe that he is Whitey Bulger.

He has been named on many lists for the upcoming awards season and this may be his shot to finally win some awards.

Bottom Line – Depp is unrecognizable as this gangster which works to his benefit because he does a wonderful job. He has been shortlisted for numerous awards for this role. Unfortunately the story feels too choppy and disjointed and instead of a fluent story, it comes off more as numerous gangster vignettes that only tell part of the whole story.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2003), Johnny Depp admitted that he broke his rule of not watching his own movies with this one. He was at the film’s debut in Venice. He was about to skip out of watching the film, but the director asked him to stay, so he did. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
