This is my 18th of 31 reviews of Stephen King adaptations as part of the joint Blogathon that Darren (of Movie Reviews 101) and I are running this month in honor of the great horror writer.
Stop by every day to read more and more from us and from other guest bloggers.
“You’re Peter. And you’re Mary. So where’s Paul? I mean, how can you sing “Puff the Magic Dragon” without Paul? [starts walking, then stops again] Wait a minute… Peter Jackson? I LOVE “Lord of the Rings”!” – Collie Entragian
Number of Times Seen – 1 (14 Oct 2015)
Brief Synopsis – A number of tourists must find a way to escape from the clutches of a strange and deadly sheriff who has taken them prisoner
My Take on it – This is another King novel that I haven’t yet read and I am fairly certain that the book is much better than this mediocre adaptation shows it to be.
The cast is great here with Tom Skerritt, Steven Weber, Annabeth Gish, Charles Durning, Matt Frewer and Henry Thomas are doing wonderful jobs, but the scene stealer is by far Ron Perlman who plays the evil sheriff Collie Entragian.
Unfortnately, their talent is somewhat wasted because the story presented here is pretty weak and at points even a bit boring and slow.
Like most King adaptations, I assume that had it been even longer, it would have had more time to explain things better; the 2+ hours they have just isn’t enough to make this enjoyable enough.
Bottom Line -Like most adaptations, the book is probably much better. Perlman is great as the Sheriff. Excellent cast, but the story is somewhat weak. Like many of King’s adaptations, this would probably have been better if it had been even longer because it felt a bit cramped at slightly over 2 hours.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Stephen King was reportedly annoyed that the ABC Network decided to show the film on the same evening that the popular TV series American Idol aired. King blamed the Networks poor scheduling decision for the disappointing ratings that Desperation received. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
