Paper Towns (2015)

paper towns “What a treacherous thing to believe that a person is more than a person. ” – Quentin

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Oct 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A teenager goes on a road trip with his friends to try and find his missing neighbor.

My Take on it – After seeing, reading and loving The Fault in Our Stars (2014) last summer, I was quite thrilled to know that there was another John Green book being adapted to film.

I never got around to reading this book, but had very high expectations that I would be drawn into this movie just like the previous one.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen at all.

I had trouble getting into the storyline and the characters despite a nice attempt at explaining so much through narration.

Apparently, it wasn’t enough for me because I still felt that there must be so much missing to help keep the story pieced together, instead, I felt like I was doing a jigsaw puzzle which upon finishing it, I realized that it was still missing a few pieces.

The mystery of the book is left too ambiguous and the characters felt too distant.

I really hope that the book truly is much better, but IMHO, this was just a mediocre attempt at following up on the magic that I felt in TFIOS.

Bottom Line – Had much higher expectations because I enjoyed The Fault in Our Stars (2014) so much and was disappointed that I couldn’t connect to the characters and story as easily. Narration was done well, but once again, I assume that the book is much better because things can be explained more thoroughly.  The mystery is left too ambiguous and the whole premise feels like it’s missing important elements to bridge the story together more properly.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The “SeaWorld” scene from the novel will not be seen in the movie. This is because the movie “Blackfish” had made people rethink SeaWorld and captivity. If the SeaWorld scene were in the movie, people would possibly boycott and the box office would be low. The screenplay writers decided it would be best to not put the SeaWorld scene in. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

  1. I liked the film, I think I appreciated it for the road trip side of things and the bond between the main guy and his friends, that was fun and quite touching. Though the film did annoy me due to the unlikeable main girl and the main guy’s obession with the gilr and how he pushed his friends away in pursuit of this relationship that may not even happen.
