Love & Mercy (2014)

“I want you to leave, but I don’t want you to leave me. ” – Brian love & Mercy

Number of Times Seen – 1 (12 Oct 2015)

Brief Synopsis – Biopic of the troubled life of Beach Boys singer Brian Wilson at two pivotal stages of his life

My Take on it – I have always enjoyed the music of The Beach Boys, but never really gave much thought into how the band came to be or even how they created their music.

This movie does a great job trying to help us understand how it came to be and also how Brian Wilson, despite having problems was the driving force behind their music.

John Cusack and Paul Dano are both superb as Wilson in the two time lines depicted in this movie and at certain points it truly is possible to see similarities between the two.

Paul Giamatti once again appears this year in a movie as a megalomaniac manager that has constant conflict with the main character depsite him being a position to “care” for him.

This movie is not just a normal biopic, but also a voyage into the mind of a musical genius who bordered on madness.  We get one step closer to having an understanding of what it must have been like for him to live with such mental conflict.

The music in this movie is great, we are treated to many songs by The BB themselves and also by Wilson as a solo including his amazing song that lent its name to the title of the movie. (great choice of title)

Here’s a clip of it:

Bottom Line – Cusack and Dano are both superb here as the different ages of Wilson. Loved the integration of the BB music into both timelines to try and help explain things a bit more. Giamatti has become to go-to-guy whenever a manager is needed and plays the megalomaniac very well.  We get an impressive insight into Wilson’s mind which helps us go one step closer into understanding his genius/madness. Obviously great music by both The Beach Boys themselves and by Wilson in his later years. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the 1980s, Eugene Landy and his associates attempted to organize a biopic of Wilson’s life entitled Love & Mercy with William Hurt as Wilson and Richard Dreyfuss as Landy. In the late 1990s, another biopic was planned with Jeff Bridges as Wilson. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
