Genre Guesstimation – Shuffle (2011)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s Genre has been chosen by me.  In honor of the month when Marty McFly came to visit us here in 2015, I have decided that we will be reviewing our favorite movies featuring time travel.

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Movies featuring Time Travel…

“No matter what, you are not alone” – Grace

Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Oct 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A man wakes up every day at a different stage in his life and must try and find out why this is happening to him.

My Take on it – A few weeks ago, I stumbled across an amazing documentary called Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008) which is a very personal film by director Kurt Kuenne about the murder of a good friend of his.

I began to research Kuenne’s career in order to try and find out if this movie was an anomaly in his resume or if he had other films that were also done really well but lacked the proper attention by mainstream movie lovers.

This is one of the movies that I came across and so far I am in both shock and awe that he is not a more sought out director/writer because this movie is unbelievable.

I loved the idea of a man ‘leaping’ around in his own life and own body trying to figure out why this is happening to him. It’s so innovative and unique and works so well here.

The star of this film, TJ Thyne has been familiar to me for years because I am an avid fan of the TV show Bones where he is a main character.

This must gave been a pretty challenging role for him because he needed to physically portray his character at different ages in his life.

The length is slightly under 90 minutes and is the perfect length because it doesn’t feel forced or lagging while trying to tell this story.

I really liked the fact that two of Thyne’s co-stars from Bones were willing to play supporting roles here because it was nice to see them work together (out of the lab).

I really hope that Kuenne continues to make such wonderful films for us to constantly enjoy and be amazed by his storytelling ability.

Bottom Line – Great idea for a movie that is done so well. Thyne is amazing especially since he must play so many different physical versions of the character. Perfect length for a film like this. Love the fact that a number of Thyne’s ‘Bones’ costars took part in this wonderful movie. Highly recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – SHUFFLE received the FRANK CAPRA AWARD at this year’s Fallbrook International Film Festival. The award, named in honor of the legendary director of It’s a Wonderful Life, was presented to writer/director Kurt Kuenne by Mr. Capra’s grandson, Frank Capra III, at the festival’s awards gala on April 7th. The award is presented to the film that “most lifts the human spirit, fostering a positive and (hopefully) lasting outcome.” (From Shufflethemovie.com)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Most definitely. This movie is so fresh and innovative that it really worked for me.

Rating – Oscar Worthy
