Time Bandits (1981)
The nobility of Time Travel: undoing mistakes, retroactive prevention, altering history, meeting heroes, even using it to bring someone back from the dead as Superman did.
But robbing history? Stealing from Napoleon, Agamemnon, even Satan just to live it up? That’s priceless. And that’s what 6 dwarfs (God’s ex-shrub-makers) and an unwitting boy do.
Using a map of time portals, they find famous people and swipe their treasures. These historical locations are fantastically created with commanding craft.
Unfortunately, Robin Hood robs them blind (gotta love the irony)…
…but that’s part of the pricelessness. It’s original and saturated with bizarre humor.
Two of Robin Hood’s men are arm wrestling and suddenly Guy A rips Guy B’s arm completely off and asks who else wants to arm wrestle next. The best part is that, while he’s asking, he tosses Guy B’s arm into a basket of arms.
And of all the devils, demons, Satans, and Lucifers in film – none top David Warner as the personification of Evil.
There are many reasons to check out Time Bandits: set designs, A-list cast, bizarre story, original world, innovative characters, and delightful humor are but a few.
