True Crime (1999)

true crime“When my nose tells me something stinks, I gotta have faith in it. ” – Steve Everett

Number of Times Seen – 2 (9 Jan 2000 and 2 Nov 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A down on his luck reporter is given a job to cover a death row inmate execution and subsequently is given evidence that might prove his innocence

My Take on it – I have always enjoyed Clint Eastwood movies where he both stars and directs because he has been able to prove over the past 25+ years that not only is he a great actor, but he is an even better Director.  His two Directing Oscars are proof too.

This movie didn’t do as well in the theater as it probably should have, but it is a very intense and tait thriller that has some high stress moments that will leave you clinging to your seat.

Intertwined within the plot is also an advocacy message that keeps popping up throughout.

The dialogue is great especially when some of the characters are insulting each other in their office.

Besides Eastwood, the cast is really great; Denis Leary, James Woods, Isiah Washington, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Michael Jeter and Michael McKean are all really good here.  This movie also has 3 important women from Eastwood’s family in prominent roles; His ex-partner Frances Fisher, his wife Dina Eastwood and his daughter Francesca Eastwood.

While not perfect, this is a very gripping movie.

Bottom Line – Eastwood is great as both star and director. A gripping crime thriller that also has an advocates message weaved into its plot. Great cast that includes numerous Eastwood relatives and really delivers. Great back and forth dialogue. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Warner Bros. first optioned the book, they were considering George Clooney for the lead. Script difficulties held-up the production and Clooney went on to other roles. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
