“The National Science Foundation had invited me to Antarctica even though I left no doubt that I would not come up with another film about penguins. ” – Werner Herzog
Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Nov 2015)
Brief Synopsis – A documentary about what it’s like to live and work in Antarctica.
My Take on it – I have always been interested in life in Antarctica ever since I was younger.
15 years ago, a scientist friend of mine went there (with a bit of help from me and my office) and I constantly enjoyed hearing his stories.
Ironically, he actually visited me the day after I watched this movie and once again told me tales of his trip after I mentioned that I watched this film.
Werner Herzog does and amazing job of capturing the uniqueness of so many people who have uprooted their usual lives and families to seek out adventures and new ideas in the vast frontier of the coldest place on Earth.
The visuals that he presents us are quite wondrous and show the draw to the beauty of the place.
He manages to introduce us to numerous people who each are interesting in their own way and we feel that we are better off having met them when all is said and done.
I lost a bit of respect for this film when I heard that a few key scenes were possibly staged just for the cameras, but all in all, it is still a very enjoyable film to watch.
Bottom Line – The visuals in this movie are wondrous to view. I’m amazed that Herzog was able to find and introduce us to such a diverse group of people who were living on the bottom of the world when he made this film. I’ve always been intrigued by the adventurous nature of people like the ones shown here who are able to seek new discoveries in the vast frontiers of the world. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Werner Herzog dedicated the film to Roger Ebert, who he calls a true “warrior of cinema”. Due to the dedication Ebert could not review the film, but he wrote a complimentary letter to Herzog and later published it. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
