Darren and Rob’s Movie Challenge Week #21 – Rob’s Challenge -The Crow (1994)

Darren and Rob'sBeing that Darren and I both love watching lots and lots of movies, we decided to start a new weekly series where we challenge each other to watch a new movie that we enjoyed and feel the other one might also.

The rules are simple; it has to be a movie we have NEVER seen, (not just not reviewed)

Every Tuesday, we will both post both reviews on our sites.

Let’s hope we both can add lots of new favorites to our personal lists

For my review this week, here are my thoughts on…..

“Can’t rain all the time… ” – Eric Draven the-crow-poster

Number of Times Seen – 1 (19 Nov 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A year after he and his girlfriend are killed by a gang of thugs, a man returns from the dead to enact revenge on them.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I have been avoiding for over twenty years.

Despite being a fan of comic book movies, this one just felt too dark for me to really be interested in what was going on.

When Darren gave this movie to me as a challenge, I was actually hoping that my fears were in vain and that I would somehow enjoy this seemingly very dark film.

Well, my initial feelings over twenty + years was very right!

I didn’t really like this movie at all.

It was way too dark for me to feel any kind of satisfaction or hope that the “superhero” would prevail.

The characters really all feel very cartoonish or comic bookish which is sometimes good, but not here.

I think a lot of people love this movie more for it’s cult theories and for the superstitious nature of all of the mishaps on screen.

This being one of the few movies where an actor was actually killed by accident with a prop has raised the cult status so high that I can understand the cult following, but it just doesn’t really apply to someone like me.

Bottom Line – Can’t say I liked this one very much. I think it became a cult classic because the accidental death of Lee on set. The story is too dark for me and I can’t say that I liked any of the characters very much to care what would happen to them.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – According to Jon Polito, Brandon Lee cut himself when he broke the glass in Gideon’s shop. The glass was breakaway glass and it is very rare for anyone to get cut by it. Polito says that he told Lee that he feared Lee would die in an on-set accident like Vic Morrow did during filming of Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983).  (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

  1. This is my favourite comic book film adaptation. Very true to the source material with some great performances. I never bought into the whole superstitious angle of Lee’s death or anything, just love it for being a solid film. Sucks you didn’t like it very much, but to each their own.

  2. And it has a crackin’ soundtrack. Sorry you didn’t like it. It’s a personal fave of mine precisely because it’s dark – revenge doesn’t seem to work as well otherwise – just ask Beatrix kiddo. 😀

  4. I love this movie. Probably my fav comic book adaptation. Too bad you didn’t enjoy it more. Now definitely avoid the sequels then. 😉 I’m not sure about the cult theories or superstition, but I really enjoyed the revenge, action, music, cinematography, one liners, and performances. Check out my retro review for more. The Crow could be argued for best romantic movie too 😉 Returning from death for love, right.

  5. I love The Crow, I’ll admit it has dated a bit but I love the style of it. I don’t think youre correct about it being a cult classic because of what happened to Brandon Lee, I think it’s a genuinely great movie. Also Brandon Lee is fantastic in it.

  6. I loved this movie, I thought it was excellent. Dark, dangerous, fantastic. Sorry to see you didn’t enjoy it as much! However, I am with Mikey – I don’t think Lee’s death is the biggest thing responsible for achieving its cult status.
