If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front (2011)

IATF_poster“When you’re screaming at the top of your lungs and no one hears you, what are you supposed to do?” – Daniel McGowen

Number of Times Seen – 1 (19 Nov 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A documentary chronicling the hunt, capture and trial of suspected domestic terrorists who fight against the government and other organizations who violate environmental issues.

My Take on it – This is yet another interesting documentary that I came across by accident that I had never heard of beforehand.

In actuality I wasn’t even aware of any of the events described in the film; perhaps because I’m not an activist (for anything) or because I don’t follow these kind of news stories.

I felt taht they did a very good job here giving us both sides of this story in a pretty balanced way and by the end of the movie, I felt that I now was more enlightened about a subject with which I knew absolutely nothing about.

I find it very interesting thinking about how the definition of the word terrorist and terrorism has radically changed over the last two decades and now means so much more than beforehand.

I can now understand both sides of this debate and sympathize with both of them while still feeling enough distance to keep an impartial opinion on it all.

Bottom Line -Interesting documentary about a subject that I really can’t say I was that familiar with. They do a good job of presenting both sides of the story and by the end, one feels much more enlightened by the subject matter.  Terrorism has taken on a new definition over the last two decades and it’s easy to see both sides of this debate. Recommended!

  2. Great documentary. I had this front and center in the Staff Picks section of my video store. The ELF are an interesting activist group, fueled by Malcolm X like coda “By any means necessary.” While the specific incident highlighted in the movie went too far, the filmmakers let you decide the morality of their cause. This doc also provided a compelling hands on look within the so called terrorist cell. Thanks for spotlighting indie cinema. Share the wealth, right.
