The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
This month’s Genre has been chosen by Abbi of Abbiosbiston.com We will be reviewing our favorite Alternate Love Story movies. In order to get a better idea as to what this genre might include, check out this post by Abbi from last year. Please get me your submissions by the 25th of November (you can still send it if you haven’t yet) by sending them to firstname.lastname@example.org Try to think out of the box! Great choice Abbi!
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Alternative Love Story Films…
Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Nov 2015)
Brief Synopsis – A lonely and anti social man buys an anatomically correct blow up doll to be his girlfriend. His friends and neighbors begin to treat her as if she is real in order to help him try and cone out of his shell.
My Take on it – I’m not the biggest fan if quirky movies like this one and that in and of itself turned me off a bit here.
I understand the story and also the premise that they are trying to relay to us, but I just couldn’t connect enough to the characters or the way the story was told.
There are also too many scenes that felt creepy instead of moving like a romantic movie should.
On the other hand, I think Ryan Gosling is great here because he gets so much into his character that we can believe that he believes Bianca is real.
Bottom Line – A bit too quirky for my taste. I understand the plot and the reasons for everything that transpires, but I just couldn’t connect with it. Gosling really is great here because we really believe that he believes that Bianca is real.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – To help Ryan Gosling stay in character, the real doll was treated like an actual person, as is done by the characters in the movie. She was dressed privately in her own trailer and was only present for scenes that she was in. (From IMDB)
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not quite sure what they actually were trying for here as entertainment, but I found most of this movie quite creepy to watch.
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
