Brief Synopsis – Another reboot of the Superman Origin story

My Take on it – Superman has always been one of my favorite superheroes (yes, I’m a bigger DC fan than Marvel) and they do a decent job here of retelling his origin story.

My biggest problem is that this movie was too influenced by the Marvel Universe because they created a world where Superheroes can only exist if there is lots of death and destruction.

The Dark Knight trilogy proved to us that that really isn’t true, but the makers here decided to still follow that formula for the action scenes.

I remember first seeing the trailer for this movie with scenes featuring Russel Crowe and Kevin Costner as his two “fathers” and I had hoped that they would explore the idea of him really searching for his identity through his connections to his father(s).  This was slightly dealt with, but not enough.

I loved Costner as Jonathan Kent and unfortunately he was underused here.

Henry Cavill was actually quite a decent choice for the main role and Amy Adams as Lois Lane was also pretty good.

This movie really isn’t as bad as everyone claims and I really can’t wait to see the sequel next year to see where they plan on taking this story.

Bottom Line – Great attempt at retelling of the Superman Origin story but it is too bogged down by the way Marvel has made death and destruction a MUST for a superhero movie. Costner is great as Jonathan Kent and it’s too bad his role (and subsequently the whole identity issue) wasn’t expanded even more. Cavill is a decent Superman and seems to fit the mold that we all know and love. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia –  When Clark is first learning to fly, he is only able to make a few gigantic bounds. In the first few Superman comics in 1938-9, he was not able to fly but could only leap 1/8 of a mile like a high-powered kangaroo. The first cartoons and movies decided that this looked undignified, and made him fly which looks more majestic, even though physics give no logical reason for him to have this ability. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (no change from original review)

  1. I feel this took more of a queue from The Dark Knight movies than the MCU in going the darker route. I think movies in general are showing more destruction lately and isn’t just a MCU issue. The early stuff on Krypton were my favorite. My main issue with the rest of the film is the fact that it is so dark. This dark tone works well for Batman but not necessarily for Superman, who should have a more cheery movie since his character is so optimistic. Not everything needs to be dark and gritty like DC seems to think it should be after working so well for Nolan’s trilogy. Although I will say I am excited for Batman V. Superman, too.
