Escape to Witch Mountain (1975)

escape to witch mountain“Um, look. Um, if you don’t mind, I’d like to plan on remembering you two as if you were my kids. The kids I never had” – Jason O’Day

Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (cable and video as a kid and 15 Dec 2015)

Brief Synopsis – Two orphan kids find out that they can do wondrous things but have no recollections as to why.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I really enjoyed as a kid and upon watching Race to Witch Mountain (2009)  for my movie challenge with Darren, I decided to once again watch the original from 40 years ago.

My younger self obviously enjoyed this movie much more than I did now, but that doesn’t mean that this is not a good movie.

The kids are fun to watch as they try and discover what is happening to them and Eddie Albert is great as a man they meet who wants to help them.

I was able to recall some of wonderment of watching this as a kid because of the innocence of the story and characters which is a rarity to find in movies now a days.

This innocence and magic of the story makes us want to believe that this could happen.  AS we saw too easily with the recent remake, the tame villains in this are not possible in the 21st century and we must resort to a much more violent and darker themes than were used 40 years ago.

Although, I’ll never be able to reclaim the feelings I had when watching this all those years ago, I can stillappreciate what they tried to achieve here.

Bottom Line – Nicely done live action Disney movie that is helped by its wondrous characters who are so innocent that they make us want to believe. Eddie Albert is great as a man they meet along the way.  Much better than all of the sequels and remakes combined. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – At one point during the fight scene between Tony and Truck, Dermott Downs punched the bat so hard, it hit Ike Eisenmann. In some scenes you can see a greenish bruise under his left eye. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
