Concussion (2015)

concussion2015“The NFL owns a day of the week. The same day the Church used to own. Now it’s theirs.” – Dr. Cyril Wecht

Number of Times Seen – 1 (22 Dec 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A Pathologist uncovers a connection between the deaths of professional football players and years of unnoticed brain damage.

My Take on it – I have always enjoyed these kind of movies despite them sometimes feeling a bit too preachy.

This one is able to find the middle ground and keep this balanced without trying to make us believe the impossible.

Will Smith is great here in a role where he totally loses himself and we keep forgetting that it’s him.  These are the kind of roles I love because instead of seeing Smith as Omalu, I think I’m really just watching Omalu.

This is a story that I’m somewhat surprised has gone under the radar and only now with this movie’s release are we once again reminded about what happened and keeps happening despite it being so important for us all to know about.

My one complaint is that the relationship part of the story was very underdeveloped despite it being integral to the storyline.

If it wasn’t for Smith’s star power and performance, I think this would have felt like a very good movie of the week on TV instead of a theatrical release.

Great supporting performances by Alec Baldwin, Albert Brooks, Arliss Howard and David Morse.  Paul Reiser is also great here, but he is too underused.

Bottom Line – Smith really is great here because he gets lost in the character and we keep forgetting it’s him. Excellent true story that really needed to be told.  Didn’t focus enough on the main character’s relationship and that felt a bit tacked on despite it being integral to him continuing his crusade.  Surprised that this story hasn’t been more well known before this movie was made. Excellent supporting cast. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Muhammad Ali suffers from Dementia pugilistica, a form of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), not Parkinson’s disease as is commonly believed. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy

  2. Good review with good analysis. I was wondering how they’d frame this interesting story. Sounds like impressive performances all around. However, you mention relationship flawed. I’m wondering, how is Gugu Mbatha Raw? She’s one of my new favs.
