“They say it’s just physical abuse but it’s more than that, this was spiritual abuse. You know why I went along with everything? Because priests, are supposed to be the good guys.” – Peter Canellos
Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Dec 2015)
Brief Synopsis – Based on the true story of how an elite investigative reporting unit helped uncover one of the biggest cover-ups in history.
My Take on it – If you havent heard me say this before, I LOVE these kind of movies; investigative journalist trying to break a top story are so enjoyable to watch.
This movie’s story unfolds at a great pace and it still keeps you on teh edge of your seat throughout.
The cast is superb.
The irony is that eventhough the title of the film is Spotlight, none of the ensemble group of actors really takes the spotlight, instead they all do an equal amount of exceptional acting; Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Liev Shrieber, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci, Brian D’Arcy James, Jamey Sheridan, Billy Crudup, Paul Guilfoyle and Len Cariou are all perfectly cast in their respective roles and make this story even more real to us.
The “lead actor” and focus of this movie is clearly the story itself and that’s why we all love movies; we want to get absorbed into a compelling story and watch it all unfold before out eyes.
This is one of the best movies of the year and in some ways, I feel as if it’s been so long since I’ve been captivated by such a movie that can be called a superb film of the year.
It captures some of the feelings I’ve had while watching All The President’s Men (1976) or The Insider (1999) and I’ll go out on a limb and declare that this is even better than both of those excellent movies.
I will not be surprised if this movie continues to accrue more Best Picture awards this year leading to the big one on Oscar Night because it is so bold, yet perfectly crafted by director Tom McCarthy.
This is the kind of movie Hollywood (and movie lovers need) and it reminds me of why I love films so much.
I can’t wait to see this one again and again!
Bottom Line – Amazing movie that has such a captivating story that is bound to hook you right away. Excellent ensemble cast where no one specifically stands out besides the story and the quest for answers. One of the best movies of the year which will hopefully deservingly collect lots of awards this season. Highly Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The real Walter Robinson said: “My persona has been hijacked. If Michael Keaton robbed a bank, the police would quickly have me in handcuffs”. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy

Rob, you did a good job shining a light on this film. I had it on my list to see and review for almost 2 weeks before I actually sat with it. I loved the idea of the cast (holy smokes, the cast!!!) but I felt dragged don by the idea of the somber subject matter. I have to tell you, I watched it today and after the first credits that said “Based on real events” I was a captive audience and this film really blew me away.
I felt my blood shifting and literally shooting up and making my spine tingle many times in certain scenes when the reporters became humanitarian HEROES. When do you see that? I told my wife this movie showed me our legal system is flawed but it’s pretty good, our freedom of the press system is flawed but it’s pretty good. We need both. Together they are the scales of justice in this country. This was just a good movie! I’m so pleased it was made.
