“Time takes everybody out; time’s undefeated. ” – Rocky
Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Dec 2015)
Brief Synopsis – A continuation of the story of Rocky Balboa as he trains a new fighter who happens to be the son of his friend and former adversary Apollo Creed.
My Take on it – I have always enjoyed the movie in the Rocky series, but have never really felt the power that many claim that the character and franchise emit.
I liked the way that instead of trying to create a reboot directly, this movie creates a situation where the “gloves” are handed down to the next generation.
Michael B. Jordan is a great addition to the cast and is perfect as a copy of a young Rocky who can continue the franchise.
The story has many parallels to the original and certain scenes and situations feel a bit too similar that not all feels so original.
One of the things that I really enjoyed about this movie was the way that the character of Rocky has evolved since we last saw him nearly ten years ago.
The years have taken their toll on his life and relationships but he still finds the courage to go on despite everything that he has gone through.
Stallone has been nominated by numerous awards committees for his role here and as good a job as he does here I feel he does deserve them because he shows that even when an action star like him reaches almost 70, he is able to play a man his age in a proper dramatic role.
Bottom Line – Great addition to the series showing the passing of the gloves to a new generation. Jordan is a great addition to the cast. The story has many parallels to the original movie which us both good and bad. It’s great to see how time has changed the once champ Rocky to a man that has weathered the years and still remains on top of his game despite it all. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Sylvester Stallone (Rocky Balboa) requested that Michael B. Jordan (Adonis Creed) wear the famous American flag trunks that Apollo Creed wore in Rocky (1976) and Rocky wore in Rocky III (1982) and Rocky IV (1985) to keep tradition in the “Rocky” universe. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy

Big fan of this one. And I had absolutely no expectations whatsoever.

Good review, Rob. I really enjoyed Creed. Coogler continues to rise as an impressive new director. That one extended take for a whole fight… inside the ring?! Wow. Awesome. The emotional notes landed with impact too. I agree, Stallone needs an Oscar nomination for sure. The story may be familiar, as are the themes, but that’s why it worked so well. Kinda like that other part 7 in a 30 year old franchise 😉
