Suffragettes (2015)

suffragette “Don’t bother arresting them. Let their husbands deal with them. ” – Inspector Steed

Number of Times Seen – 1 (28 Dec 2015)

Brief Synopsis – An account of the hardships and struggles of women in England who fought for the right to vote.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I have been wanting to see for months.

The trailer made it seem so good and emotional, but in the end, the movie doesn’t follow suit.

I love a good historical drama and I learnt a lot about the British Suffrage movement from this film, but in the end, I didn’t feel that it was powerful enough as the story should warrant.

My feelings towards the end were lackluster and instead of feeling inspired by this, I felt worn down by the way it all was depicted.

Yes, I think it’s a travesty that women were (and in some places still are) oppressed solely because of their gender for so many years, but this movie just doesn’t represent the struggle well enough IMHO.

There are some exceptional performances here namely Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham-Carter and Brendan Gleeson and they elevate the story a bit, but  unfortunately not enough.

I’m still confused why Meryl Streep got such high billing since she plays a character who barely is in the film despite having an important role.

This could have been so much better and more engaging, but unfortunately is just lackluster.

I have been told that the reason I didn’t enjoy this movie enough is because I’m a man. I don’t know if that’s true, but I hope it isn’t the reason because even movies with themes like this one should be universally enjoyed by both genders equally.

Bottom Line – Wanted to like this more than I did but besides a few very good performances this movie feels like it’s missing a lot of the energy that we saw in the trailer. Not sure why Streep deserved to get such high billing for her two-three minute role.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This was the first film that was allowed to be shot in the British Houses of Parliament since the 1950s. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
