The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
This month’s Genre has been chosen by Natasha of Life of This City Girl
We will be reviewing our favorite Sci-Fi Movies.

Try to think out of the box!
Great choice Natasha!
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Sci-Fi Films…
Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Jan 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A rescue mission is sent to Mars to look for answers and possible survivors after the first manned mission has a disaster.
My Take on it – This is a movie with a good idea that just wasn’t executed well enough.
It started off well but they were trying too hard to make a statement like 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) instead of a compelling sci-fi film and got lost along the way.
The movie doesn’t take itself seriously enough and enters B-movie territory too often which hurts its credibility.
They somehow got an excellent lead cast of Gary Sinese, Tim Robbins, Connie Nielsen, Don Cheadle and Jerry O’Connell but despite their cumulative talent the script just isn’t good enough to do anything special.
They really had a lot of potential with this kind of movie and somehow squandered it.
Fortunately, 15 years later, someone was able to do a stranded on Mars movie right when Ridley Scott made The Martian (2015) this past year.
Bottom Line – The movie doesn’t feel like it takes itself too seriously and suffers because of it. Excellent cast just doesn’t have a better script to work with. There was so much potential with this idea which was squandered. Thankfully the Mars rescue story was done right a few months ago with a very similar themed The Martian (2015).
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The communication viewscreen on Mars Recovery was built by Silicon Graphics (hence the abbreviation logo of SGI). (From IMDB)
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not even close. Not terrible, but far from being great. It’s a mediocre sci-fi movie.
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
