The Enemy Below (1957)

enemy below[the ship has just avoided two torpedoes] “The Miami yacht races were never like this.” – Lieutenant Ware

Number of Times Seen – 1 (17 Jan 2016)

Brief Synopsis – Two naval officers try to outwit one another during a decisive WWII naval battle.

My Take on it – This is a movie where much of the action that takes place is on the faces of the two commanding officers who are trying to outwit each other.

Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens are both great here as opposing commanders during a decisive naval engagemnet during WWII who proce to alk yhat thry truly are worthy of being commanders because of their decisive and sometimes heroic commands in order to earn the right for them and their crew to go home after the battle.

Unfortunately, the narrative itself isn’t so great and we need to keep waiting for each “chess” move in order to see something happen.

All in all, this is a slightly better than generic naval battle movie.

Bottom Line – Feels very generic eventhough it’s interesting to watch the strategies used by both commanders to try and sink the enemy ship. Mitchum and Jurgens both do justice to the idea of a heroic and strategic commanding officer trying to do his duty in order to earn the right to go back home.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The space battle from the film “Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan” and the entire first season “Star Trek” episode “Balance of Terror” were based largely on the final battle in this film. The second season “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” episode “Killers of the Deep” was also based on and included footage from this movie. In addition, David Hedison starred in “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” and appeared in the main cast of this movie. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
