“Steven, with a V, that means “Very Gay”. And when people disrespect my gay brothers and sisters, I rain terror on them! Shock and awe, shock and awe. ” – Steven Goldstein
Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Jan 2016)
Brief Synopsis – After being diagnosed with cancer, a lesbian police detective tries to fight for her life partner to get her benefits.
My Take on it – This movie once again shows us that even in the 21st century, there are still prejudices held by local and sate officials that try to stop people from being free to live their lives how they so choose.
This movie strategically lets the story get very emotional along the way and the choice of the cast to fight their fights help make the viewer feel even more for what is going on.
The entire cast is great and Steve Carell steals every scene he is in.
Julianne Moore and Ellen Page are both perfect here, but still I felt something was lacking in their chemistry.
I really enjoyed Michael Shannon’s performance here because he was partially subdued but showed his true stripes when he needed to.
Bottom Line – Very inspirational true story that shows how far reaching prejudices can go. The story gets very emotional along the way and the cast chosen to fight these fights are great here. Moore and Page are both perfect here, but I felt that their chemistry was slightly off. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Zach Galifianakis was originally cast but dropped out due to schedule conflict and replaced by Steve Carell. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
