Movies From the Hat III – Honeysuckle Rose (1980)

This is my 1,980th movie review

Thanks to Summer for recommending this film to me!

honeysuckle rose“You rotten son of a bitch, you made me look like a fool out there.” – Cotton

Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Feb 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A hardworking country singer must try and balance his life on and off the road during the long stretches of time he is away from his family.

My Take on it – This is yet another movie recommended to me that I had no idea that it even existed.

I’ve known Willie Nelson and his songs since I was a kid, but was very pleasantly surprised that a number of those famous songs came to be because of this film.

The theme of this movie is a somewhat generic one because it deals with how people working away from home learn to balance their work and home lives while still clinging to some morality thread along the way.

Unfortunately, the same story could still be told today as not much would change (besides maybe the wardrobe).

This love triangle is so predictable to happen and we get to see where it leads these three people.  I liked how each of the three reacted to the situation in different ways, some more extreme than others.

In some ways this movie feels like a biopic of Willie Nelson’s life and loves and using some of his real band members help make this feel even more believable.

Ultimately, this is a great Willie Nelson concert with a generic love triangle plot.  The tunes are so memorable, that I found myself humming them all day long after watching this.

I wanted to like this one even more, but besides the sings, there wasn’t much to feel overjoyed about.

Bottom Line – This movie has the biopic feels to it. Nelson isn’t the greatest actor, but he sure as hell can sing.  Theme is really timeless and is just as relevant today as it was 35 years ago.  Using Nelson and some of his band as the characters helps make this feel even more realistic.  Enjoyable WN concert with a very generic plot.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Amy Irving and Willie Nelson started a relationship on set (despite his marriage). Irving later left Nelson for director Steven Spielberg. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

  1. Yay! I think you hit the nail on the head, the whole time I was re-watching the film I thought, “oh dear, I hope he’s at least enjoying the music!” Well, as my musical theater history professor used to say, if they leave theater humming the music then the show did its job!

Thanks for giving Honeysuckle Rose a try 😉
