This is my 1,983rd movie review
Thanks to Luke for recommending this film to me!
“In my family, a man has only to look at a woman and she’s pregnant.” – Denny
“That’s because you’re all so cockeyed.” – Rita
Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Feb 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A literature Professor forms an interesting relationship with a new student and it changes both of their lives for the better.
My Take on it – This is a film, I had heard about, but had absolutely no clue as to what it was about; truth is, I probably never would have gotten to watching it had Luke not decided to recommend it to me.
The irony here is that Luke never had seen this and was curious to know what I would make of a film like this.
Luckily for me, I loved it.
Of the 10 movies, I’ve watched so far for this series, this is clearly my favorite.
This was originally a stage play, so the dialogue is quite important and gives us some great conversations between the characters.
Usually when I chose a quote from a film, I prefer a single line from one character, but the exchange that I chose above made me laugh so hard, I just HAD to break my own tradition and use both lines of the exchange.
The dialogue is so fun and witty that it keeps you on your toes throughout and personally I was very captivated for the entire film.
The choice of Michael Caine and Julie Walters as the two leads were great and they both have such great chemistry together as teacher and pupil that it made me jealous of not ever having a teacher like Caine’s character who helps her find the correct path for her life through their verbal debates on literature and life.
This film unfortuantely doesn’t get as much love as it probably deserves and if you’re looking for a fun but serious movie about making choices in life, check this one out.
Bottom Line – Excellent and witty dialogue helps this movie remain fresh and fun. Caine and Walters have amazing platonic chemistry together and their intellectual debates are so thrilling to watch. Doesn’t get as much love as it probably deserves. Great message about making the right choices in life in order to keep yourself happy and content. Highly Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Michael Caine’s favourite film of his own, and the performance he’s the most proud of. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy
