This is my 1,987th movie review
Thanks to Zoe for recommending this film to me!
“I’m an unspeakable of the Oscar Wilde sort. “- Maurice
Number of Times Seen – 1 (4 Feb 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A British University student starts a relationship with his best friend and the two of them must decide whether to conceal it due to Decency Laws or follow their hearts.
My Take on it – Here is yet another choice that I had never even heard of before it was chosen for me.
The premise didn’t really sound as if it would be something I’d overly enjoy, but I decided to still give it a go.
This movie definitely gives an interesting perspective on forbidden love and the lengths people went to in order to conceal their true identities due to fear of the British laws.
Even 100+ years after this book was written, there still is much debate and discourse over these issues which shows how relevant this film still can be.
One of the main roles is played by a young Hugh Grant and it was nice to see him here.
The rest of the cast is also great, but Simon Callow and Ben Kingsley both stand out among them all.
Bottom Line – Very interesting look at how people perceive forbidden relationships. Quite sad that this movie’s theme and issues are still being debated over 100 years later. Great seeing Grant in one of his earlier roles. Rest of the cast is brilliant. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the DVD extras, Hugh Grant says that because he and James Wilby already knew each other from appearing in Privileged (1982) together, they were able to practice their scenes together at Grant’s house the night before Wilby’s audition. Grant says that he remembers it “being a surprise to my banker brother when he came home and found me kissing James Wilby in the front room.”(From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
