This is my 1,989th movie review
Thanks to Ryan for recommending this film to me!
“[to a horse after it scares him] If you do that to me one more time, you are glue!” – Itchy Itchiford
Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Feb 2016)
Brief Synopsis – Two canine thieves escape from prison and return to their old stomping group to find a former partner is now trying to take over the business.
My Take on it – Don Bluth split from Disney in order to make better movies, but in most cases didn’t succeed as well as he had hoped.
The Secret of NIMH (1982) is still his finest work, and nothing else could come anywhere close.
This film is no exception to that.
The characters just aren’t likeable enough and the themes are quite dark here.
As with most animated films over the last 30 or so years, the voice cast chosen are great.
Burt Reynold, Dom Deluise, Vic Tayback, Loni Anderson, Judith Barsi and Charles Nelson Riley are all very good as their respective characters and were all popular choices from that era to be cast for this.
The story itself isn;t a very string one and comes off quite mediocre instead of bold as expected.
Bottom Line – Not one of Bluth’s best. The characters aren’t as likeable as one would expect from an animated film. Great voice cast tho that really screams 70’s/80’s. Story is a bit on the mediocre side.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The movie’s title is derived from a quote by Robert Louis Stevenson: “You think those dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you they will be there long before any of us.” (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy

I have fond memories of loving watching this as a kid, but I’m too scared to revisit it as an adult for fear that I’ll hate it. Might have to stay away from it after reading this!

I’d never heard of this film. When you say themes do you mean the glue jokes or the crimes?

the way the crime aspect is presented. jokes are always good… even crude ones

I recall this being okay; I still think Anastasia is Bluth’s best film, but I still need to rewatch Secret of Nimh.
