Movies From the Hat III – Flirting (1991)

This is my 1,991st movie review

Thanks to Eddie for recommending this film to me!

Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Feb 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A teenager in an Australian boarding school learns many lessons about life and love when he falls in love with a young girl from a neighboring school.

My Take on it – When Eddie recommended this movie to me I had no clue as to what I was gonna be seeking out and watched it with a bit of fear that I wouldn’t enjoy it.

This is a very pleasant coming of age movie that takes its subject matter quite seriously but we can still appreciate the fact that its also a teen comedy.

The pacing is good and the story develops quite well that it doesn’t lose interest or get boring along the way.

The actors are actually little known from that time but each have made an impact since then.

Noah Taylor and Thandie Newton are both quite good here.

A minor actress at the time named Nicole Kidman plays a pretty small part but due to her later status, she gets top billing on many of the posters.

Due to the interracial characters, it would be expected that they would have open dialogue about the issue of race, but instead they chose to discuss it in more subtle ways which work very well to explain the tension. This works much better than I would have expected.

Bottom Line – Very pleasant and enjoyable film that moves along at a nice pace. Nice performances by young talented actors who would one day be much more popular. Enjoyed how they didn’t need to have issues of race discussed openly but we could still see those issues hanging around.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In 2011, Thandie Newton told InStyle Magazine that during the filming of this movie, its director, John Duigan, coerced her into starting a sexual relationship with him, despite the fact that she was 16 and he was 39. She clarified in the interview that the relationship was not strictly illegal, since she was above the age of consent in Australia, but that it left her feeling “self-destructive” and not “in control of the situation,” and she had to have therapy later to come to terms with its ramifications. Rating – Globe Worthy
