Number of Times Seen – 1 (16 Feb 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A documentary about 6 brothers who have lived a very sheltered life and only know about the real world via movies.
My Take on it – Being a movie lover, I expected this film to be much more engrossing and enlightening than it was.
Obviously, I feel lots of sadness and compassion for the way these young men were raised because such a sheltered life cannot be a picnic at all.
I think that not enough effort was put in for us to try and understand these men who in their own ways take their obsessions to the extreme.
I wanted to like this more than I did, but there wasn’t enough to grab onto here.
Perhaps when they do a follow-up movie, we’ll be enlightened more properly by the continuing stories of these young movie-obsessed men.
Bottom Line – Sad story that unfortunately doesn’t tell us very much about these movie-lovers to help enlighten us. So much more could have been done with this documentary in order for us to try and better understand these young men. Perhaps if they ever do a follow-up movie, we will get to understand these young men much more.

Aw man I might have to disagree with this one. I thought this thing was phenomenal, a really unique look at how movies can inspire people (as corny as that sounds) and get people through very difficult times. Hard to imagine living in these conditions.

Dang, Rob. I thought you’d like this more too 😉 This was one of my fav movies last year. Best doc, for sure. I loved the movie angle. It helped me get my foot in the door, so to speak. Once I entered the story, I was absorbed. Plus, all those cool movie references and reenactments were awesome. You really get sense that movies help the lonely, show the world, show emotions, and inspire.
This doc is a great companion piece to ROOM. These boys live in a different universe. For me, the answers are more subtle, but I think we see that their obsession comes from their father (he just wasn’t obsessed by films right). One theme is being lost (which father was), and another is being found. The most heart wrenching stuff was the mother’s transformation (a certain phone call), inspired by her son’s “rule breaking”. That scene in the park near the end really got me (she walks with son).
That said, it’d be a pretty boring world if we all enjoyed the same things, and interpreted them the same too.
