Genre Guesstimation – The Great Train Robbery (1978)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s Genre has been chosen by Dan of Slipthrough Movies We will be reviewing our favorite Crime Movies.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of February by sending them to

Try to think out of the box!

Great choice Dan!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Crime Films…

Number of Times Seen – 1 (17 Feb 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A small band of thieves decide to rob a moving train loaded with gold.

My Take on it – This is a movie that has been on my watch-list for quite some time, but I never got around to watching it.

The concept itself is quite clever and also intriguing to watch unfold on screen in front of us.

Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland work well together and they have synergism together that helps make this concept work even better.

This movie is written and directed by Author Michael Crichton (who also adapted his book for the screen) and despite him not being so well-known for his directing skills, he does a fine job here.

Bottom Line – Quite a clever heist movie with some very intriguing scenes. Stellar cast that works for the time period and idea. Crichton did a great job adapted his book for the screen and directing this film despite not being known for his directing work. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Sean Connery spent several days running on top of a moving train. The train was supposed to be traveling at 35mph; Connery argued it was going faster. The train driver was counting telegraph poles to measure the speed. A helicopter pilot confirmed Connery’s suspicion – the train was traveling at over 55mph. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Nope. It’s good, but not great.  I wanted to like it more eventhough some of the schemes were quite clever.

Rating – Globe Worthy
