Singles (1992)

Brief Synopsis – The lives of numerous singles in Seattle in the early 90’s are depicted as they seek lasting relationships

My Take on it – I have always been a big fan of Cameron Crowe scripts and watching this film as an 18 year old had a very lasting effect on me and my views on dating and relationships.

The script perfectly describes the dating scene in the early 90’s and is accentuated by the early use of Grunge bands playing in the background.

The cast is superb;  Campbell Scott, Kyra Sedgwick, Matt Dillon and Bridget Fonda are all great in their respective roles.

Lots of cameos of famous band members from the Seattle scene, plus Eric Stoltz (as a talking mime), Peter Horton (as an avid bike rider), Bill Pullman (as a plastic surgeon),  a young Jeremy Piven (as a supermarket checkout guy), Tom Skerritt (as a politician), Tim Burton (as what-else? a director), Victor Garber (as a divorcee) and even Paul Giamatti (in his first role ever. playing as a kissing guy).

The characters are so much fun to watch because they are all put into interesting situations that feel real because some are funny and some are sad.

The best part of this movie tho is the way that they constantly break the 4th wall and talk to us and they do it so smoothly never missing a step along the way.

Bottom Line – Great Crowe script really hits the nail on the singles dating scene. Excellent characters, fun situations and great music all help make this so enjoyable to watch.  The cast is really superb.  Loved the way they break the 4th wall over and over never missing a step. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the scene where Steve (Campbell Scott) is buying pregnancy tests and comes across the grocery cashier (Jeremy Piven), the cashier mentions that he knows him from “Mr. Deegan’s class”. Mr. Deegan is a teacher mentioned in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), which Cameron Crowe wrote. (From IMDB)
