Dying Young (1991)

dying young “[to Hilary] Call me insane, but I’d venture a guess that Gordon would like to warm you up in any way possible.” – Victor

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Mar 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A young woman answers an ad to be a nurse/helper for a rich man dying of cancer.

My Take on it – This movie came out towards the beginning of Julia Roberts stardom and can be seen completely as a vehicle to boost her status even more.

Unfortunately, the story isn’t too great and she has done so much better work than presented here.

The story here is quite predictable but hints numerous times at some interesting directions that it can go but instead it seems to take the safe route and avoid them at all costs in order to keep things as Hollywoodicized as possible.

I have always liked Roberts’ portrayals as well as co star Campbell Scott’s but neither of them has enough chemistry together to make this feel believable enough.

It was nice to see Vincent D’onofrio in a ‘normal’ role (for a change), but something still feels quite off with his character that makes him not as likable as he should be.

Being a fan of Jeopardy in particular and of Trivia games in general, I loved that they had a scene featuring parts of an episode with lots and lots of trivia to be answered (or guessed).  For me, this was the highlight of this movie and that in and of itself says a lot about what I think of this film in general.

Bottom Line -Not the best of Roberts’ work.  The story feels too predictable and despite liking both Roberts and Scott, they have no chemistry here whatsoever. I liked seeing D’Ononfrio in a “normal” role, but he still feels a bit out of place here. The script hints at a few more intriguing possible directions of the story but stays too neutral instead of pursuing them leaving everything feeling too ‘safe’.  Loved the clips from Jeopardy scene.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In later years, Joel Schumacher admitted that he felt he was the wrong director for the film. Schumacher did the picture as a personal favor to Julia Roberts because he’d enjoyed working with her on Flatliners (1990). (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
