Brief Synopsis – A reboot of the franchise featuring the tales of the original space explorers who have been entertaining fans for nearly 50 years.

My Take on it – For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a fan of Star Trek.

I’ll admit that I haven’t seen all of the episodes or even every one of the different series in the franchise, but I have seen all of the movies many many times and am therefore quite familiar with the Original Enterprise crew.

I recall when this movie came out and I was soo hyped to see what Director JJ Abrams could bring to us.

After seeing it the first time, I knew I’d see it again and within a week was back in the theater for my second viewing.

Suffice it to say, I loved everything that they presented us with; Abrams was able to take the original show’s ideas, enhance them for 2009 and then emulate what we all know and love about the Star Trek universe in general and specifically about the crew.

Loved the way that they chose to reboot their histories and we get a very clear explanation as to how the deviation occurred and how it will effect the original timeline.

The cast choices of the actors is amazing because each and every one of them were able to recreate the mannerisms, speech patterns and overall attitudes of the characters that we have grown to love and emulate over the years.  There were even some scenes where it is easy to forget that we are not watching the original actors who played these characters.

They do a wonderful job of expanding and focusing on the histories of many of the characters which helps create even more complex and multidimensional characters for us to watch.

The musical score is superb and along with the special effects we are truly transported to a different time and place in the not too distant future.  Both of these elements also help enhance the viewing experience of the film.

Yes, I’m willing to admit that there are a few inconsistencies in the story-line, several plot holes and general flaws, but the movie is still extremely fun to watch regardless.

This truly is the beginning of something great and I for one can’t wait for the next installment that will come out in July and (hopefully) many more in the years to come.

Bottom Line – Excellent reboot that has been able to emulate and also enhance the characters from the original incarnation.  Expands their tales and also gives a valid explanation for the deviation from the original time line. Great casting choices of actors who are able to recreate the reasons why we all loved the originals even to the point where we sometimes forget that they aren’t one in the same. Gives us great perspective on the histories of many of the characters which helps create more complex and multidimensional characters. Amazing musical score and special effects that definitely enhance the viewing experience. The story has its flaws and plot holes but is so much fun to watch regardless. Excellent start for what will hopefully last for many years to come. Highly recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia –  Roberto Orci drew on his personal relationship with Alex Kurtzman as a basis for the relationship between Kirk and Spock: “We’re from different worlds; I was born and lived in Mexico City until I was nine, and Alex was born in the US. Kirk and Spock are opposites from two worlds; that’s us in a nutshell. We’re drawn to each by what each of us lacks. This film is about two guys who are such opposites that they might end up strangling each other, but instead they bond and thrive together.” Inspiration also came from the friendship of The Beatles members John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Rating – Oscar Worthy (no change from original review)

  1. Awesome review yo, you’ve summarised all of the reasons why I love this film. I used to watch Next Generation and Voyager with my dad, and so I had a little familiarity with this franchise beforehand, but I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. Besides some of the issues with the story and the weak villain, I loved the characters, presentation and adored the music.
