Point Break (2015)

Point-Break-poster“Ugly is what we do.” – Instructor Hall

Number of Times Seen – 1 (10 Mar 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A rookie FBI agent is assigned the case of trying to stop a group of bandits who commit heinous crimes by using daring and extreme techniques.

My Take on it – This is yet another example of Hollywood doing a really really poor job of trying to copy its successes for a new generation when all they have to do is rent the original.

The characters are much weaker here than in the original and all any of them want to do is bigger and more amazing feats of extreme sports than they have done before.

They took a very interesting and intense bank robbery story localized in California and tried to turn it into a global race against time to stop extreme sports fanatics from committing a series of feats planned out adjacently with crimes.

I lost interest quite quickly because I didn’t care for any of the characters and the plot just wandered along trying to make sense and connect the dots amidst extreme sports activities.

The characters and plot leave no lasting impression on us and the only thing one might remember are the extreme stunts that we get to watch.

Unfortunately, a movie with random stunts like this just can’t hold itself up without any semblance of a plot or intriguing/interesting characters and that is where this movie fails extremely.

There are a few scenes where Luke Barcey tries to channel his inner Keanu Reeves, but they just don’t help here at all.  Edgar Ramirez is a great actor, but his character of Bodhi doesn’t come anywhere close to being as complex or interesting as Patrick Swayze did with it 25 years ago.

Suffice it to say, watch the original instead of wasting your time on this one.

Bottom Line – Terrible remake. The original was sooooo much better and more interesting.  Also made a lot more sense. I wish Hollywood would just stop trying to ruin great movies by remaking them like this one. None of the characters or actors are very memorable here. The only thing that is quite impressive are the stunts, but in order for a movie full of stunts to be interesting, the plot and characters must also be well developed.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – On the helmets used for a robbery they stuck caricatures of the Presidents, probably a tribute to the original Point Break. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy

  1. I think this film would have been more successful had it not been marketed as a remake. A few small links aside, it has very little to do with the original and could well have been viewed better without that connection.
