Number of Times Seen – 2 (cable in the 90’s and 10 Mar 2016)
Brief Synopsis – An arrogant surgeon learns the meaning of patient care when he himself is diagnosed with a tumor and must undergo treatment in his own hospital.
My Take on it – I really liked the way that this movie showed both sides of the coin of doctor-patient care.
Yes, it goes a bit to extremes here and there, but overall it manages to hit the nail on the head in realism.
Most of us have been in a hospital and know how much of what they say here is quite true from the patient perspective, but the doctor’s side of it also seems to ring true.
The message here is clear though; that the patient care must be more humane, caring and understanding.
The fact that this movie came out 25 years ago and not much has really changed says so much about the difficulty of making such a change.
It’s a bit sad that they are actually able to present a working model of making this change that on the surface seems to be a step in the right direction but hasn’t made the impact it could have especially since this is based on a real doctor’s story.
The cast is superb and William Hurt (who I’ve never been much of a fan of) does a great job playing both sides of the issue.
The rest of the main cast are some superb actors who hadn’t yet reached their prime. (See trivia section below).
I truly believe that this movie should be required watching for all incoming medical students/residents despite its flaws.
Bottom Line – Really shows how patient care needs to be more humane, caring and understanding. Unfortunately, not much has really changed in the 25 years since this came out, but it still is a workable model to follow. Excellent cast who mostly hadn’t yet reached their prime. This film despite its flaws should be required viewing for all medical students/residents. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Co-stars Christine Lahti, Mandy Patinkin, and Adam Arkin all played doctors on Chicago Hope (1994). (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
