Brief Synopsis – The life story of an elderly bear told thru the use of a children’s toy
My Take on it – Well, this was another one I messed up on come Oscar Night last month.
As we all know, sometimes it’s quite hard to pick a movie in your Oscar Poll without having seen it yet.
That’s why every year, I try to see as many of the Oscar Nominated Films as possible before the ceremony so I have some kind of idea as to what’s going on.
The categories which are the hardest to watch before the end of February are usually the Foreign Films and the shorts.
I actually had the pleasure of seeing World of Tomorrow (2015) days before the show, and since many forums where I hang out were all saying that that movie would take home the Gold statue, I didn’t really try and find a way to watch any of the others.
Boy, was that a mistake.
This movie was extremely powerful and nearly drove me to tears.
The use of a diorama to tell this story was really an ingenious one because it adds so much to the story.
The animation is beautifully done and we are captivated by the story the entire time.
They expertly use animals as the characters in the analogy of the story and on first thought it is clear that they used animals in order to soften the impact of the horrific acts perpetrated in the story.
When I thought about it more, I actually realized that the use of the animals actually makes the analogy even more powerful to watch.
Parts of the story actually seem inevitable right from the start, but the way it all plays out makes it quite interesting to watch as it slowly unfolds before our very eyes.
Definitely deserved it Oscar win!
Bottom Line – Ingenious way of telling such a poignant and interesting story. Definitely deserving of it’s Oscar win as best animated short film. The use of animals helps soften the immediate impact of the story but when one thinks about it, the use of animals actually makes it even more powerful an analogy. Great use of animation that is captivating the entire time. Highly Recommended!
