Magnum Force (1973)

magnum_force_poster_by_mruottin-d3i6ii51“Nothing wrong with shooting as long as the right people get shot!” – Harry Callahan

Number of Times Seen – at least 2  (Cable in the 90’s and 17 Mar 2016)

Brief Synopsis – Dirty Harry is once again on the case, this time when criminals seem to be murdered by a vigilante who may very well be a fellow policeman.

My Take on it – In some ways, I think this is the best of the 5 Dirty Harry movies because it is able to focus on the story without having to introduce us to the main character.

They do a great job here of creating an interesting story and the cat and mouse aspects are done exceptionally well here.

They help establish the character of Dirty Harry even better than in the first one because we get to compare and contrast his actions within the border of the law with the actions taken by those outside the law despite them both having the same ultimate goal.

The supporting cast (looking back) is great and includes Tim Matheson, Robert Urich, Hal Holbrook, Mitchell Ryan and David Soul.  Most of them weren’t very well known at the time but knowing who they all are now, makes it even better to watch them work and adds even more tension and thrills to the story.

I really enjoyed the twists and turns in this film and it was nice watching them unfold as it goes along.

The special effects used in the 70’s for blood always looks really fake to me, but it’s still funny to watch how much it was used back then.

Bottom Line – Once again a very interesting procedural because it shows us the extreme differences between Harry and vigilantes; he works against criminals within the law while other go beyond the lines of the law. Great cast of supporting actors including Tim Matheson, Robert Urich, Hal Holbrook, Mitchell Ryan and David Soul all add to the tension of the story. Has some great action scenes and also some excellent twists and turns along the way. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – David Soul’s performance as Officer John Davis, one of the vigilante cops, led to his being cast as Detective Ken Hutchinson in the classic cop series Starsky and Hutch (1975). (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
