Number of Times Seen – 1 (28 Mar 2016)
Brief Synopsis – After a corporation takes over a zoo, the caretakers must find a way to stop it from being shut down.
My Take on it – I guess when something works so well, it’s worth trying to recreate the magic with the same cast and crew even if the plot and story isn’t as good or as clever even.
This film re-teams John Cleese, Michael Palin, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Kline. It is expected that they would have great chemistry together here after all they achieved in A Fish Called Wanda (1988) and they really do.
In their first film, Kline stole every scene he was in and made us laugh uncontrollably. This time, that role goes to Cleese and his character is the funniest and best of the lot especially when there are obvious misconceptions between the characters.
There are a lot of jokes here that are very reminiscent of old Monty Python skits (surprise, surprise), but unfortunately they don’t last long enough and seem a bit disjointed from the plot (which is actually a good thing here).
The plot moves along pretty slowly throughout and then speed sup to breakneck speed only for the finale.
Bottom Line – Great reteaming of the cast and crew of A Fish Called Wanda (1988). This time tho, it’s completely Cleese’s show. Lots of bits are reminiscent of Monty Python skits (for obvious reasons), but they are too few and far between to make this a better film to watch. Not really funny enough and the plot moves along pretty slowly until the ending.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The theatrical trailer opens with the statement ‘The following preview has not been tested on animals’. The main cast is introduced as ‘Oscar winner’ Kevin Kline; John ‘Absolutely no chance of an Oscar’ Cleese, Jamie Lee ‘My mom & dad almost got an Oscar’ Curtis and Michael ‘I know someone called Oscar’ Palin. The trailer ends with a clip from the deleted ending in which Kline’s character Vince McCain is hit in the groin by a charging rhino and send flying. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
