Silly Little Game: ESPN 30 for 30 (2010)

silly little game“Draft Day is the single most important day of your life.” – Daniel Okrent

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Apr 2016)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary about the history and origin of fantasy baseball.

My Take on it – I have been a fan of Fantasy baseball since I was a kid and still am (somewhat) active with it even now.

This is a film that chronicles the origins of the world of fantasy baseball which has led to so many different kinds of fantasy sports over the years.

It was great seeing the interviews with the original players and how they recount and recall what actually happened.

It still amazes me that such a concept has managed to reach billions of people in the 35+ years since its inception,

The number of similarly founded games since its mind blowing and the Internet has been so helpful in moving them forward.

The Internet really has changed things because I do recall having to check the daily newspaper box scores every morning when I played as a kid in order to see how my players did the previous day.

Luke, The Oracle of Film, a movie blogger friend of mine even managed to create a Fantasy Acting League that is already in its second season.  Check it out here of you want to get involved and participate.

The only problem that I can see with this film is the fact that it’s target audience isn’t really fan of film, but rather fans of fantasy sports, so it probably won’t be as interesting for those who have little to no knowledge of the way it works.

Bottom Line – Very interesting and eye opening documentary that is probably more interesting for those of us who are more familiar with and have played the game.  It’s really unbelievable what has become of this small idea from 35 years ago tat it has become such a world wide phenomena.  The Internet has really revolutionized the way that these games are played for the better and I for one am grateful for it. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Fantasy Sports is estimated to be a $4 billion industry that boasts over 30 million participants and a league for almost every sport imaginable. (From ESPN)
