Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story (2010)

Jews-and-Baseball-An-American-Love-Story “Suddenly, I had a hero and it was Sandy Koufax.” – Ron Howard

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Apr 2016)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary about the contribution Jews have made to the sport of baseball from its inception until today

My Take on it – Being a Jew, I always enjoy seeing things from the Jewish perspective and this movie is no exception to that.

I liked the way that they did this film because as a fan of baseball, it was interesting to see the way things played out chronologically.

The subject is too vast to cover in just an hour, but they did a nice job of giving us an overview of over 150 years of the sport and the impact that it had on Jews in America and vice versa.

The way it highlights some of the most impactful Jewish baseball players was good (despite once again being too abridged) and I learned a lot about the incredible baseball careers of Hank Greenberg, Sand Koufax and Shawn Green both on and off the field.

This is a film that could have been even better had it been given a longer running time.  The fact that many o the anecdotes and stories felt rushed is a prime example as to why.

The subject matter is truly vast and this just gives us the tip of the iceberg especially since it doesn’t expand enough on the impact of the modern Jewish baseball players.  They felt glossed over because of lack of time.

Perhaps one day, someone will make a sequel to this and tell us more about the recent players.

Bottom Line –  Very interesting documentary that explains the impact Jews have had on America’s favorite past time sport. Gives a great overview of the 150 years of the sport and highlights some of the most prolific Jewish players over that time including Hank Greenberg, Sandy Koufax and Shawn Greene. Not perfect, but still quite insightful. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Dustin Hoffman does not normally narrate films, and initially turned down the project. But when he looked at the script, he changed his mind, saying: “Oh, this is about bigotry and overcoming anti-Semitism, about discrimination and these issues that I grew up with, that really matters to me” (From Wikipedia)

Rating – Globe Worthy

  1. As both a Jew and a baseball fan, I’d be interested in viewing this documentary. I remember Sandy Koufax pitching for the Dodgers! Thanks for the heads-up, Rob. 🙂
