Number of Times Seen – 1 (14 Apr 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A stranger comes to a frontier town filled with prospectors and is hired as sheriff to keep things in order.
My Take on it – I had heard of this movie but never had the chance to watch it before now.
They do a great job spoofing the Western genre. They use normal clichés of the genre and the best part of it all is that they don’t take themselves very seriously.
My favorite scenes were the funeral and the bar-less jail cell.
The cast is fun here and it seems as if they really enjoyed making this.
The method of spoofing it all works well here and the light atmosphere helps contribute even more.
The choice of James Garner as the sheriff was a great one and he seems so comfortable in the role.
The rest of the cast is also great with Harry Morgan, Joan Hackett, Walter Brennan, Jack Elam, (a very young) Bruce Dern and Henry Jones.
The script is lots of fun and the witty dialogue helps keep us engaged throughout.
Loved how lots of the dialogue is stopped at the perfect point when trying to be funny.
This film makes fun of so many of the perfect cliches of the old West, gambling, drinking, shootouts in the middle of the street, horse manure, local brothel and of course, the proper use of a gun and where NOT to stick your finger.
Definitely worth seeing because of its humor!
Bottom Line – Very funny Western that knows not to take itself seriously. Helps spoof the entire genre all across the board. Garner is excellent here and plays the title role perfectly. Fun script that had great dialogue for the characters to spew with lots of amazingly funny banter between them. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film’s title is a parody of a bumper sticker popular around the time it was made, “Support Your Local Police” part of the “law-and-order” movement led by such politicians as Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George Wallace. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
