That’s So 80’s – Wargames (1983)

80S-WARGAMES-Main

THIS IMAGE-DRIVEN SERIES SHINES AN OBNOXIOUS PASTEL NEON LIGHT ON THE 80-EST 80s MOVIES AROUND.

THAT’S SO 80s! takes a nostalgic trip down VHS memory lane, remembering some of the cheesiest movies from one of the cheesiest decades.

Fellow movie connoisseur MOVIEROB joins forces with SLIP/THROUGH for a semi-regular column highlighting some of the best scenes (and fashion choices) of the era.

This edition of That’s so 80s gets intense with the retro techno thriller WARGAMES starring Matthew Broderick before he was FERRIS BUELLER. This is one for social outcasts, who can see what computer hackers were up to decades earlier, and how much fun they had getting into mischief without the Internet at their disposal.

Rob and Dan breakdown what they love about this retro gem, from the 80s fashion to the 80s sensibilities.

Enjoy your THROWBACK THURSDAY! And Stay Rad!

WARGAMES was a huge favorite of mine during the 1980’s. What kid didn’t like this movie that takes a normal high school kid who loves computers and games and gets into trouble with the government?

Wargames was a huge favorite of mine during the 1980’s.

This came out before Matthew Broderick became a household name as Ferris Bueller, so it was done in a low-key fashion, but he still does a wonderful job here.

The computer equipment used here was really state of the art and I recall being jealous that they had a phone that can be placed directly on a modem as opposed to us having to disconnect the phone line from the receiver and plug it directly into the slow-moving, grinding modem.

Also would have loved to have a computer that talked to me (still wish for that) J

Along with Broderick, this movie has a great cast of famous 80’s actors including Ally Sheedy, James Tolkan, Dabney Coleman, Barry Corbin, Michael Ensign and the great Eddie Deezen.

This is the ultimate 80’s geek movie because it keeps things quite simple and still manages to keep things interesting especially when dealing with The Cold War issues in an interesting factor because it adds in the whole AI aspect.

I actually heard that due to this movie, much legislation was passed in the US dealing with information and computers to declare what is legal and what is not.

A lot has happened in the 30+ years since this movie came out and it’s so interesting to see how archaic it looks, but it still feels like this could happen now at the same time.
