Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 2001

DTGIR 2001

This was the year where there was a lot of talk about the songs because they were all done by well known artists and they each did an amazing job performing them on stage.

The best song by far IMHO is May it Be by Enya, but just like many other awards that LOTR should have win that year, many weren’t yet ready to embrace a fantasy film for awards that weren’t solely technical and also one that seems incomplete due to it being part of the trilogy.

I think Randy Newman won this year solely due to the fact that he was deserving to finally win after losing so many times beforehand.  This isn’t his best song, but hey, what can you say.

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “May It Be” – The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring • Music and Lyrics: Enya, Nicky Ryan, and Roma Ryan

  • “There You’ll Be” – Pearl Harbor • Music and lyrics: Diane Warren

  • “Until…” – Kate & Leopold • Music and Lyrics: Sting

  • “Vanilla Sky” – Vanilla Sky • Music and Lyrics: Paul McCartney

  • “If I Didn’t Have You” – Monsters, Inc. – Music and Lyrics: Randy Newman

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • The Distance – Evan & Jaron (Serendipity)

  • Not of this Earth – Robbie Williams (Bridget Jones’ Diary)

  • Waiting in Vain – Annie Lennox – (Serendipity)

  • When You Know – Shawn Colvin (Serendipity)

My Rankings:

Songs

  • 5. – Vanilla Sky
  • 4. – Until
  • 3. – If I Didn’t Have You
  • 2. – There You’ll Be
  • 1. – May it Be

Movies

  • 5. – Kate and Leopold
  • 4. – Vanilla Sky
  • 3. – Pearl Harbor
  • 2. – Monsters Inc
  • 1. – The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Nope, not this year
