Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 1981

DTGIR 1981

As you’ll see below, 1981 was a pretty mediocre year for original songs in movies.

The winner of the Oscar is by far the best song here and is one of the only memorable ones on the list.

Even a muppets song like The First Time it Happens just lacks a Rainbow Connection-like aura.

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “Endless Love” – Endless Love • Music and Lyrics: Lionel Richie

  • “For Your Eyes Only” – For Your Eyes Only • Music: Bill Conti • Lyrics: Mick Leeson

  • “The First Time It Happens” – The Great Muppet Caper • Music and Lyrics: Joe Raposo

  • “One More Hour” – Ragtime • Music and Lyrics: Randy Newman

  • “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” – Arthur – Music and Lyrics: Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, Christopher Cross and Peter Allen

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • Cannonball Run – Ray Stevens (The Cannonball Run)

  • The Inquisition – Mel Brooks (History of the World Part I)

  • Jews in Space – Mel Brooks (History of the World Part I)

My Rankings:

Songs

  • 5. – Endless Love
  • 4. – One More Hour
  • 3. – The First Time it Happens
  • 2. – For Your Eyes Only
  • 1. – Arthur

Movies

  • 5. – Endless Love (Haven’t seen)
  • 4. – Ragtime
  • 3. – The Great Muppet Caper
  • 2. – Arthur
  • 1. – For Your Eyes Only

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – YES! The Theme for Arthur truly is the best of the lot here

Let me know what you think about these songs!
