Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 2007

DTGIR 2007

None of the 5 songs chosen this year make me enthusiastic about their nominations.  There are many better songs from this year that should have contended, but were not chosen for some reason or another.

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “Happy Working Song” – Enchanted • Music: Alan Menken • Lyrics: Stephen Schwartz

  • “Raise It Up” – August Rush • Music and Lyrics: Jamal Joseph, Charles Mack, and Tevin Thomas

  • “So Close” – Enchanted • Music: Alan Menken • Lyrics: Stephen Schwartz

  • “That’s How You Know” – Enchanted • Music: Alan Menken • Lyrics: Stephen Schwartz

  • Falling Slowly” – Once – Music and Lyrics: Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • Grace is Gone – Jamie Cullum (Grace is Gone)

  • Don’t Write Me Off – Hugh Grant (Music & Lyrics)

  • Way Back in Love – Hugh Grant (Music and Lyrics)

  • Through The Dark – Alexis Murdoch (Gone Baby Gone)

  • Rule The World – Take That (Stardust)

  • Lyra – Kate Bush (The Golden Compass)

  • Little Wonders – Rob Thomas (Meet The Robinsons)

My Rankings:

Songs

  • 5. – Happy Working Song
  • 4. – So Close
  • 3. – Raise It Up
  • 2. – That’s How You Know
  • 1. – Falling Slowly

Movies

  • 3. – Enchanted
  • 2. – August Rush
  • 1. – Once

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Not really, it’s a decent song, but there are better ones that I think could have beat it.

Let me know what you think about these songs!
