Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 1985

DTGIR 1985

In following with the 80’s tradition of choosing amazing songs for this category, all of them are great, but the 3 top songs  (1 from Back to the Future and 2 from White Nights) became 80’s icon music hits and are ingrained in our minds.  The other two got lost along the way

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “The Power of Love” – Back to the Future • Music: Chris Hayes and Johnny Colla • Lyrics: Huey Lewis

  • “Surprise Surprise” – A Chorus Line • Music: Marvin Hamlisch • Lyrics: Edward Kleban

  • “Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister)” – The Color Purple • Music: Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton • Lyrics: Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie

  • “Separate Lives” – White Nights • Music and lyrics: Stephen Bishop

  • “Say You, Say Me” – White Nights – Music and Lyrics: Lionel Richie

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • Rhythm of the Night – El Debarge (The Last Dragon)

  • A View to a Kill – Dura Duran (A View to a Kill)

  • We Don’t Need another Hero – Tina Turner (Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome)

  • Goonies R Good Enough – Cyndi Lauper (The Goonies)

  • Don’t You Forget About Me – Simple Minds (The Breakfast Club)

  • We Are Not Alone – Karla Devito (The Breakfast Club)

  • Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – Cyndi Lauper (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun)

  • Gotcha – Thereza Bazar (Gotcha)

  • When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going – Billy Ocean (The Jewel of the Nile)

  • Burning Heart – Survivor (Rocky IV)

  • No Easy Way Out – Robert Tepper (Rocky IV)

  • St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion)- Jon Parr (St. Elmo’s Fire)

My Rankings:

Songs

  • 5. – Surprise, Surprise
  • 4. – Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister)
  • 3. – Separate Lives
  • 2. – Say You, Say Me
  • 1. – The Power of Love

Movies

  • 4. – A Chorus Line (Never seen)
  • 3. – White Nights
  • 2. – The Color Purple
  • 1. – Back to the Future

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Nope, Power of Love is slightly better than Say You, Say Me, but I can understand why it won

Let me know what you think about these songs!
