Breakin’ (1984)

Breakin'_movie_poster“Yeah, go out and sweep, kucklehead. Who are you anyway, Fred Astaire? ” – Ozone

Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (Cable in the 80’s and 19 Apr 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A dancer joins forces with two breakdancing sensations in order to win a dance competition.

My Take on it – I remember seeing this movie and its sequel numerous times on cable and enjoying both of them.

The story itself feels a bit too generic and it seems as if they took a cookie cutter story and added in breakdancing to try and give it a new and fresh feeling.

There isn’t much that can be said about the acting here because it’s quite wooden and in some cases laughable.

The dancing is done extremely well tho and it takes me back 30+ years to when breakdancing was a craze.

If I recall correctly, the sequel was slightly better, but the jury’s out in that until I find a copy to rewatch it.

Bottom Line – Liked how it highlights the breakdancing world. The story itself tho feels quite generic. The acting is extremely wooden but the dancing is great. If memory serves, the sequel which came out later that year was slightly better.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the first “street dancing” scene (the one in which Kelly accompanies Ozone and Turbo to the beach), the audience watching the dancing is comprised of surfers and beach bums. In said audience, we see a man in a black singlet clapping with the music. This man is Jean-Claude Van Damme in his first on-screen appearance. According to Van Damme, he tried hard to draw attention to himself by jumping in the air and doing flips but they were not included in the film. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
