This year was a clean sweep for the finale of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and they dominated every category that they were nominated for. The Best Original Song was no different than all of the other categories where the choice seems pretty easy. The winning song is so much better than all of the other options, so it wasn’t much of a surprise here.
Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)
- “Belleville Rendez-Vous” – The Triplets of Belleville • Music: Benoît Charest • Lyrics: Sylvain Chomet
- “A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow” – A Mighty Wind • Music and Lyrics: Michael McKean and Annette O’Toole
- “Scarlet Tide” – Cold Mountain • Music and Lyrics: T-Bone Burnett and Elvis Costello
- “You Will Be My Aint True Love” – Cold Mountain • Music and Lyrics: Sting
- Into the West” – The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – Music and Lyrics: Fran Walsh, Howard Shore, and Annie Lennox
Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)
- The Heart of Every Girl – Elton John (Mona Lisa Smile)
- Man of the Hour -Eddie Vedder (Big Fish)
- No Way Out – Phil Collins (Brother Bear)
- Great Spirits – Tina Turner (Brother Bear)
- Beyond the Sea – Robbie Williams (Finding Nemo)
- The Trouble With Love Is – Kelly Clarkson (Love, Actually)
- Too Lost in You – Sugarbabes (Love, Actually)
- I’ll See it Through – Texas (Love, Actually)

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Most Definitely!!! Into the West is such a great song and LOTR:RoTK is such an amazing movie in every aspect
Let me know what you think about these songs!
“into the west” is brilliant, even without the movie context. but both together get me to tears every damn time. but thank you also for mentionning “man of the hour”, one of the saddest pj songs ever. this is a very interesting series to follow!
