Number of Times Seen – 2 (7 Mar 2007 and 2 May 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A has been 80’s singer is hired to write a new song for one of the most popular singers around and only has a few days to get it right.
My Take on it – This is a movie that my interest in rewatching was tweaked by the fact that in my research for my Did They Get it Right? Series, I came across a few of the songs from the movie and thus rekindled my urge to see it again.
As many of you already know, I’m a kid of the 80’s and love to reminisce about that decade because of the unique look, feel, sounds and of course language common to that era.
This movie does a wonderful job capturing those senses because the main character is a former pop star from the 80’s. We get to hear his popular #1 hit numerous times and by the time the film was over, I couldn’t get it out of my head (That’s a good thing in this case).
The rom-com aspect of this movie works and it’s fun to watch things unfold here.
Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore have pretty good chemistry together despite the fact that there is such a large gap between their ages (14 or 15 years I think).
The songs created for this film are quite good and are very catchy ballads that fit whichever era they are trying to connect with.
Here are three of the songs:
Loved how they did a “pop-up” video at the beginning of the credits which makes it feel like its real 80’s nostalgia.
Bottom Line – Fun rom-com that has the added benefit of an 80’s vibe throughout. Chemistry between Grant and Barrymore is good despite the 15 year age difference. Some great original songs including the pseudo 80’s hit that I still can’t get outta my head. Great pop-up video right before the credits. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – During the premiere in Amsterdam, a woman pretended to interview Hugh Grant but ended up handcuffing herself to him, and walking the red carpet with him. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
